Paul specialises in powering his students towards success in English. He kick-started his career teaching to GCSE and A-Level and has now been in the prep school environment for over 5 years, working at Barnardiston, an excellent and extremely popular Suffolk preparatory school, with close links to the top Cambridge schools. Here, Paul has had particular success in making literacy, notably poetry, more accessible to pupils of all abilities.

He has also tutored pre-test and 11+ English for entrance to the major Cambridge schools. This has included Verbal Reasoning and some interview technique as well as exam strategy. He is used to working with children who do not have English as their first language, accommodating their needs both

in boosting confidence for oral communication and in improving their literacy skills ready for exam success.

Paul’s scholarship and 13+ students have won places to top public schools including Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Stowe, Oundle, The Perse, Westminster and Wycombe Abbey. His students have been prize-winners in exams for Rugby school and achieved distinctions in exams at Westminster. Paul has attended Common Entrance courses at Eton, which have served to inform his approach immensely. He has a calm, methodical approach, and is determined on personalising his sessions, tailoring each element to suit the individual needs of his students.

Paul firmly believes that through sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for English language and poetry, he can make a huge difference to students preparing for the literacy demands of Common Entrance and Scholarship papers.

Sophie has 19 years experience teaching English and Latin at leading preparatory and public schools in the south of England. She has extensive knowledge of the transfer process at 13+, having held the role of prep school Director of Studies which involved liaising with senior schools and helping children prepare for interviews as well as overseeing their preparation for Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations in all subjects as well as teaching her own. Sophie has prepared scholarship candidates for Eton; Harrow; Winchester; Marlborough; Wellington; Charterhouse; St. Mary’s, Ascot; Cheltenham Ladies’ College and many other public schools. She also has extensive experience of teaching children with learning support needs and was Head of Learning Support at a prep school for five years.

Sophie is in high demand as a tutor. Her students have enjoyed significant successes in their exams this year and this looks set to continue. Parents have been known to return to Prep School Tutor to seek Sophie’s support for their children once they have moved on to senior school, such is the rapport she is able to build with her tutees and the benefit they gain from her tuition. Sophie specialises in unknotting the difficulties that can so easily occur when Latin is taught in larger classes, and then moving forward through the syllabus at a pace that suits the individual. As an English teacher, her methods for helping children to generate ideas and structure longer pieces of writing are, she has been told, used by her students even once they have moved on to university! She also specialises in teaching reading techniques that allow exam candidates to maintain the focus they need to perform well in comprehension papers, even when under the pressure of an exam situation.

Sophie has a proven track record of obtaining excellent results for pupils in both her specialist subjects. She does this by breaking down the curriculum into manageable sections, smoothing out any problem areas and reminding pupils frequently of the progress that they have made to boost their confidence.

Sophie has been extensively involved in the preparation of candidates for interviews and selection days at academically demanding public schools, including most of the London day schools; she excels at preparing even the most anxious for interview. She has undertaken considerable research into the different approaches to selection taken by different schools and the sorts of questions they ask. Sophie’s method is to equip candidates with the strategies they need to be able to think calmly under pressure so they can answer taxing questions without becoming flustered. She also works hard to ensure that candidates feel they have plenty to talk about by drawing out their interests and enthusiasms in her encouraging preparatory sessions.

Sophie’s aim as a tutor is to prepare her pupils so well that they approach examinations or interviews fearlessly and embrace both as an opportunity to demonstrate who they are and what they know. She aims to give her tutees a love of learning - and even rigorous assessment - that will last for the rest of their lives.

When not teaching, Sophie enjoys spending time, preferably outdoors, with her husband, young son and their Border terrier, Rosie. She loves food and growing and cooking her own vegetables. A good weekend away would include a city break (she lives very rurally) with a visit to a great restaurant and a trip to the theatre.

With expertise and experience ranging from Greek Tragedy to modern fantasy, Jon has learning resources and reading recommendations to cater for and inspire any individual.

Jon began his teaching career at the highly regarded Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Buckinghamshire, before moving to one of the independent sector’s most innovative institutions, Berkhamsted School. Jon has been successfully teaching English Language and Literature at both iGCSE and A-Level for 6 years and continues to enjoy helping his students fall in love with English. With a passion in place, success often follows, and Jon has seen many of his students achieve exceptional grades at all levels; many of his students have gone on to study their chosen subjects at their first-choice, Russell Group universities.

Jon employs a patient and personalised approach to tutoring, coaching his students to develop their own critical voice as well as a logical and attractive writing style. His methods are designed to empower his students and instill in them the skills and confidence needed to approach analysis of both studied and unseen texts. Jon has an expert command of the English language and has taught the subject at A-Level throughout his career. He is dedicated to passing on his knowledge of English and, not only preparing his students for their examinations in English Literature and Language, but also demonstrating its value beyond the classroom and into the world of work and recreation.

Jon is a great believer in life-long learning and is currently studying and working towards his MA in English Literature with The Open University alongside his teaching responsibilities. He reads widely, often with an eye to using contemporary texts to inspire and challenge his students. Jon firmly believes that the dedicated study of English Language and Literature will positively benefit any student’s life, not only ensuring their success in public

examinations, but also preparing them for life beyond the classroom. With his guidance, students will develop a strong critical voice, explore their innate creativity and fine-tune an attractive writing style adaptable to any purpose. Furthermore, his students will also develop a confidence and self-awareness that will help them to approach any and all challenges faced during their educational years and beyond.

IGCSE 2.png

Jane is a highly experienced teacher and an excellent communicator. She has worked at management level as well as in the classroom both in the UK, including St Paul’s Girls, and in British international schools. Her experience covers Reception all the way through to Year 13 but she specialises in the 11+ Common Entrance exams (100% success) and, more recently, the GL online assessments. She has 20 years experience preparing for examinations for entry to UK prep and secondary schools, as well as schools in the US and the highly competitive international independent schools in the Middle East. She is an expert in eLearning and online tuition having developed her school's eLearning strategy over the past few years.

A recent ISI inspection report mentioned her impact across the school and was particularly impressed by the confidence and independence of the children in terms of finding their own solutions to tasks and by the level of higher-order thinking that they employed. Jane sees the development of these skills as key to exam and general study success.

As well as using past papers and published resources, Jane devises a range of resources to engage pupils and she tailors them to each pupil's needs. She thinks it is important to set tasks into context in order to add another layer of meaning to the work. Jane is adept at breaking down tasks, questions and topics into their

component parts and helping pupils to understand their structure. In fact, much work is done in analysing question types and finding both the similarities and differences between papers, believing that, if a child can identify a question type they will more quickly reach an answer.

Jane's last five performance reviews and lesson observations have all been rated 'Excellent' with comments on her attention to detail, diligence and approachability. A senior colleague described her to visitors as an 'inspirational teacher'.

Jane has also been a form tutor over the course of her teaching career, which adds another dimension to teacher pupil relationships. She enjoys developing these relationships and finding out about her pupils aside from their academic progress. Her mixed ability classes include pupils with a wide range of educational needs, and she is accustomed to differentiating in a number of ways: by task, by outcome, assessing for learning and one to one support.

Jane currently works in Kuwait and resides in Wales during the generous international school holidays. The time difference between the UK and Kuwait is just two hours. Her passions are travel, world food, collecting perfume, writing, reading fiction and political biographies, following international politics and movies.

Diane has a wealth of experience in education having taught English Language and English Literature from 13+ through to A-Level. She is also qualified to teach History, French and R.E. to 13+ and GCSE as well as Latin to 13+ in readiness for Common Entrance.

Diane has taught at, amongst others, St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir School and Notting Hill Prep in London, where she was Head of English. She is well versed in expectations for entrance to both London independent schools and to other major UK public schools. Diane has successfully helped many students, some hopping a couple of grades higher than their predicted levels, to reach their target schools with confidence.

With regard to her teaching style, Diane suggests that some students feed from straightforward information and learning facts, devices and techniques. Others need a different approach, perhaps via examples (WAGOLL), via one-to-one help, highlighting text, discussions/reminders of techniques they must use. Diane produces her own resources based on need so that every individual can excel. Her lessons are carefully planned and include varied learning activities to maintain focus and energy.

Diane is positive and encouraging, whilst maintaining a highly academic approach, with a developed general knowledge, which supports and enhances her subject knowledge. She is a respected teacher who gives respect in turn to her students. She is particularly proud of the progress she made with a group of Year 9 students where motivation for learning was very low. Over the course of three terms, Diane managed them and they now are some of the brightest, most motivated and respectful students that she has taught. Diane says that this was a task comparable to turning the Titanic. However, unlike the Titanic, her class did not at all sink! They are enthused for learning and have a positive work ethos.

In the wider context of teaching, Diane is well aware of safeguarding. She is interested in the tenets of mindfulness: its worth and practice in education and, coupled with this Diane is also interested in the recent focus on emotional literacy and emotional intelligence. Diane feels that, as teachers, we must help to build the whole student, a well-rounded one, who can face the challenges of the modern world with a sense of strength, independence and confidence.

Phil is an exceptional teacher and communicator, having taught at leading preparatory school Dulwich Prep London for the past 5 years. During his time in the school’s esteemed English Department, Phil taught across Key Stages 2 and 3. He has many years’ experience in preparing students for the 13+ Common Entrance examination and holds a 100% record of success at this level. An impressive number of students have attained A or A* grades under his guidance, many of whom have vastly exceeded expected levels. Phil has prepared students for entrance into top public schools including Eton, Westminster, Harrow, Winchester, Kings Canterbury, Marlborough, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and many others. Phil has worked with high achieving students to prepare them for scholarship awards into such top schools as Eton and Westminster. He has extensive experience in preparing students for the London Day School 13+ examinations, including for schools such as Dulwich College, Alleyn’s, Trinity and Whitgift. Additionally, Phil has taught Year 6 English, preparing students for 11+ pre-test exams. He has a keen understanding of syllabus and requirements across all of these levels.

In 2017 and 2018, Phil wrote and directed the main Summer Term theatre productions at Dulwich Prep - an immersive theatre piece and a full-scale musical, both of which were incredibly well received by parents and pupils alike.

As well as using past papers and published resources, Phil draws upon his wealth of experience and creative ingenuity to devise his own comprehension papers, model writing pieces, worksheets and multimedia presentations. He is passionate about engaging students in stimuli beyond the written word, by using the analysis of film, theatre, photography and art frequently in learning. This gives his students an impressive cultural engagement which sets them apart from their peers in understanding and engagement with the text. It also makes learning a great deal more fun and exciting!

Phil focuses on teaching students structured exam technique whilst also nurturing inspiration and passion for literature. He is passionate about tapping into every student’s full potential, understanding that a child needs to experience individual recognition and belief, in order to thrive. As a result of this approach he has seen students blossoming under his teaching; many students who have struggled with English in the past have discovered a confidence and passion for the subject under his care. Parents have commented that Phil’s teaching has been the “breakthrough” in their child’s learning they have been hoping for.

Phil brings a unique energy and excitement to teaching, aided by his extensive experience as a writer and performance poet. As well as performing across London’s top spoken word venues, his writing has been published in both written and filmic form (www.vimeo.com/shmaya). He is also a keen writer of prose, having written two novels for children and young adults. This passion for performance and the written word spills over into Phil’s teaching as he uses storytelling and poetry to inspire students, as well as guiding them in how to use creative performance skills in order to inspire confidence both in and outside the classroom. His skill as a writer and poet make him an expert in teaching creative writing and poetry analysis in particular.

Phil has a great deal of experience in preparing students for interviews and selection days at the top London Senior Schools, having in-depth knowledge of common interview questions and how pupils should present themselves. His experience as a performer enables him to coach students in the use of body language and vocal technique to help them “stand out from the crowd”.

Phil is a highly organised and motivated professional. He firmly believes that a well-ordered and focused teacher inspires the same attitude and approach in his students. To this end, he plans and prepares every lesson with clear goals and objectives in mind. He is a proponent of individualised learning, creating personal plans for students which include target setting and guidance in learning focus. This approach gives his students a sense of control and progression over their learning, as they begin to realise how far they have come.

Phil’s experience as a form tutor and Head of House gives him excellent interpersonal and pastoral skills. He has worked with students who have specific needs, including those with Downs Syndrome and those on the autistic spectrum, whilst also mentoring children with behavioural difficulties.

These varying facets of Phil’s practice and character set him apart as an engaging and effective teacher who inspires and motivates with great success in a tutoring situation. Tutees under his care gain confidence, skill and a keen sense of excellence. They have fun and discover a new passion for literature and learning due to his infectious energy and unique approach.

Phil has recently moved to Northern Ireland with his wife and two young daughters. In his spare time he enjoys running, eating out and drinking great coffee!
